Miguel Gomes has begun shooting Savagery (Selvajaria) in Canudos, Bahia, Brazil. The film is an adaptation of Euclid da Cunha's novel Rebellion in the Backlands and focuses on the third part of it. The story follows the bloody war of 1896-1897 between the residents of Canudos and the Brazilian Republican Army. Grace Passô is the only professional actor; the rest of the cast consists of local residents. Rui Poças returns as cinematographer. Uma pedra no Sapato leads the co-production, together with partners from Brazil, France, Italy, and the Netherlands. Luxbox handles international sales.
