On September 8, La Biennale di Venezia and Eurimages presented new extras on gender equality in European film during the Venice Production Bridge. Of the 2,103 submitted feature films, 25% were directed by women, compared to 39% for short films. In the Competition, that share drops to just 9%. Over the past ten years, Eurimages recorded an increase in female directors from 25% to 40%, with 2024 being an outlier. Both organizations identify the same pattern: the higher the budget, the lower the female representation. The gap remains widest in productions exceeding ten million euros.
